Did you know ?

The origin of the name Chinchilla:

There are several theories, one of which is that the word chinchilla comes from the name of the Chincha tribe, an indigenous group that once lived in the Andes in South America, where the chinchilla originated. These steep, rocky mountains provided an ideal habitat for these nocturnal, gentle creatures with dense fur.

Until the 19th century, the beauty and softness of the fur of these animals meant that they were hunted in large numbers. Today, wild species, which have become very rare, are protected.

Over time, the name "Chincha" became associated with the animal itself, eventually evolving into "chinchilla" in the Spanish language and continuing in many other languages to refer to this small mammal.
